College
in line for business award
A Wakefield college is set to make the grade in a Patent Office
design and business studies competition.
Students from St. Thomas à Becket in Sandal are shortlisted
in the business studies category for the Safety First competition
where they were asked to develop a promotional campaign for a home
fire-safety pack. There were 108 entries for the business studies
aspect of the national competition in total.
The competition was open to 14-16-year-old students using the
Patent Office's 'Think Kit' education pack which explains the importance
of patents, design registrations, trademarks and copyright in protecting
your creative ideas.
The Patent Office also ran a category for business studies students
in which they were challenged to develop a promotional campaign
for the fire-safety pack. The competition winners will be announced
in July and presented with prizes by BBC presenter and Ideas 21
innovation network patron Adam Hart-Davis.
Education manager at the Patent Office, Dave Morgan, said: "We
have had a tremendous response to this year's competition. The standard
of entries has been very impressive. The fire-safety aspect seemed
to trigger the students' imagination. As well as the students learning
about managing their ideas, they are thinking about safety."
