Students get a taste of eLearning from SAM

The college has subcribed to the eLearning website called SAM Learning giving students access to revision exercises and practice exam questions online.

SAM (Self Assessment Method) Learning is used by more than half of all English state secondary schools and is consistently one of the UK's busiest web sites. For students, SAM Learning offers independent learning at home or school through web-based GCSE & KS3 SATs exam practice and revision. This improves student's exam technique, confidence and results, and allows them to do and mark their own work. For schools, SAM Learning can be used with interactive whiteboards and for homework setting, giving rich data feedback irrespective of place/time of use.

SAM Learning offers a range of subjects at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and can be accessed anywhere at anytime using the Internet. Students at St. Thomas à Becket Catholic College were introduced to SAM Learning through ICT lessons and after one week over 300 of our students were actively using the website.

Published, independent research shows that by using SAM Learning for more than 10 hours:

  • GCSE students improved – 4.7% in gaining 5+A*-C GCSE passes
  • KS3 students improved –
    • English 0.08 National Curriculum levels
    • Science 0.14 National Curriculum levels
    • Maths 0.13 National Curriculum levels
