Students get on the trail

STUDENTS got a grasp of what being a citizen of the Merrie City is all about during a trail through Wakefield last week.

Children from St. Thomas à Becket Catholic Comprehensive College, Barnsley Road, were taken on the Citizenship Trail and visited Wakefield Town Hall and the cathedral.

The year seven classes learned all about the important civic duties and engagements undertaken by the council and clergy and the heritage of the city.

The project, which has already proved popular with Wakefield College, features a visit to the parlour of the mayor of Wakefield, Coun Janet Holmes, and is organised by the Westmorland Centre.

Ged Capper, centre manager, said: “The response from the groups has been tremendous and the presentations they gave showed a good insight into what they had learned and how they had interpreted their roles as citizens in Wakefield and society.”

The children visited Wakefield Town Hall and county hall in the morning before taking part in self-reflection sessions at the cathedral.

These sessions allowed the students to creatively show the part they had to play as citizens of Wakefield and they did presentations using poems, music and even rapping.
