Sophie Richardson – Tumbling
Sophie starting gymnastics at the age of 1yrs old at Jumping Gym Mini’s at Rothwell Sports Centre and totally loved it from the 1st time she went. At the age of four she went to Morley sports centre and trained four hours a week and from there she was chosen by the head coach from Carnegie, Cristina Predescu who had been a Romanian National coach who saw potential in her right back then.
She did Womens Artistic 4piece gymnastics at Carnegie training 5nights a week doing 20hours at the age of 7!!! She competed at her 1st Elite competition at the age of 8yrs old coming 28th at National level and 2nd overall on the vault…the same year she competed at the Pegasus Open Championships in Maidstone against girls from all over the UK,also from France,Sweden,Germany and Holland where she came 2nd overall and won the floor routine by nearly a whole mark showing a great talent for tumbling.
Sophie also led a team of 4gymnasts at St Mary’s Primary school Rothwell in Leeds to win the West Yorkshire games last year herself being the top scorer of the day.
At the age of 10 Sophie decided she wanted to start tumbling so she switched disciplines and started tumbling again at Carnegie in Leeds training 4days a week Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings. It took her a while to adjust but then competitions and medals started to arrive coming 9th at the British under 13 championships in 2008.
In March 2009 Sophie competed again in the British under 13 compulsory championships where each competetor does exactly the same 3tumble runs where she had an amazing day and came 2nd overall.
November 2009 she competed in the British under 13 voluntary championships where each tumbler does their own selected tumbles all valued at different tariffs and the start value of each tumbler varies depending on the difficulty of the 3runs and again Sophie had a great day and came 4th overall.
This year Sophie moves up into the next age group of under 15 so being only 13 in September it will be hard for her at 1st but she has just qualified for the British finals in May so fingers crossed.

By admin | March 2, 2010
Welcome to the new look St Thomas a Becket website.
It is still a work in progress so please bear with us!
It’s been a busy first term but I would like to thank all the staff, students, governors and parents for making me feel so welcome.
With this support we’ve been able to do the following in the first four weeks;
- Re-draft the school SEF
- Prepare for Humanities re-designation
- Meet 85 parents at the first Head’s forum
- Establish a parents focus group of 48!
- Complete our Whole School Plan for terms 2 and 3
- Meet our partner primary Heads
- Re-visit our BASIC STANDARDS
- Re-focus year 11 to make sure they do their very best
- Meet the Student Council from each year group over lunch and see what appetites some of them have!
- Re-establish KS3 and KS4 recreation zone
- Plan to improve our facilities (meeting the local authority and the Diocese)
- Get the inside of the school painted including the chapel!
Becket’s is an amazing place.
It’s a privilege and a pleasure to work here.
The job has just begun. How much more can we do?
I look forward with genuine enthusiasm in working closely with you all in the future.
Yours in Christ,
John Rooney
Headteacher.
